Robert H. Richards began what would become Richards, Layton & Finger in 1899.
Richards Layton is the state’s largest, one of the oldest, and one of the most innovative law firms.
Because our office in Wilmington, Delaware is our only office, Richards Layton lawyers are uniquely positioned to provide clients with autonomous and efficient representation.

, among many others, have named numerous Richards Layton lawyers as the best in their fields.
Four Richards Layton directors are fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
A Richards Layton director is the immediate past president of the Delaware State Bar Association.
Richards Layton lawyers have helped to draft and revise many of the statutes that govern business in the state, including the Delaware Statutory Trust Act, Delaware General Corporation Law, Delaware Limited Partnership Act and Delaware Limited Liability Company Act.
In addition to being the first major law firm in Delaware to have a female partner and an African-American partner, Richards Layton is a founder and continuing sponsor of the Delaware Minority Job Fair, a significant initiative established in 1992 to attract diverse students to the Delaware bar.
The News Journal’s
“Best in the Business” named Richards Layton one of the best places to work in Delaware in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Several Richards Layton lawyers have been appointed to the state and federal judiciary, including to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, to the Federal District Court, and as the chief justice of the Delaware Supreme Court.
As part of the firm’s Green initiative, our new computers have “energy smart settings” as well as monitors that improve onscreen viewing of documents to reduce printing—and we’ve recycled our old computers to local schools.
Richards Layton lawyers logged 8000 hours of pro bono and community service during the past year, reflecting the contributions of 92 percent of the firm’s associates and 70 percent of the directors.
Richards Layton is a member of several major law firm organizations, and our directors have served in leadership positions in Lex Mundi, the world’s leading association of independent law firms.
